If your goal or desire is to improve your conversations, whether it be with family, friends in your workplace, or otherwise, asking better questions is essential. A great question serves as the helm that directs your discussion. It creates those “aha” moments. If questions are asked effectively, it can take you from the airport to your desired destination. Let’s look at teachers for a moment; they cannot lead a lesson without asking carefully curated questions. Graesser and Person (professor of psychology and graduate student in the Department of Psychology at Memphis State University, respectively) published an interesting article in the American Educational Research Journal in 1994. They have discovered that teachers ask anywhere from 300 to 400 questions daily. So, my friend, if you want to have more meaningful conversations, start by asking better questions. Your questions don’t have to be complicated. Let them be as simple as a small key; remember small keys open bank vaults.
