Last year Michelle Obama gave an emotional speech at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) that inspired many. The biggest takeaway from the speech came in the form of seven words, “When they go low we go high.” Those words resonate well with many especially those individuals who have been bullied or disrespected by others. If you had forgotten how to respond to rude people, Michelle’s speech came as a great reminder. Her message is clear. When someone insults you, respond with respect. When someone approaches you with hate, respond with love. Be the adult when someone acts immature. You don’t have to be a politician to embrace her message because it’s something we should adopt to have a better experience in our homes, on our jobs, and in our communities. I don’t know where the speechwriters got their inspiration from, but when I reflect on those seven words, I’m reminded of what the prophet Isaiah said: “My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways…”
